Capital Square, an investment sponsor specializing in tax-advantaged real estate, has promoted Shari Sears to executive vice president and controller of Capital Square, and Cozie Sawyer to controller of Capital Square Apartment REIT Inc., a recently launched private real estate investment trust that invests in multifamily communities in the Southeast and Texas.
Sears, who joined Capital Square in 2017 as controller, has worked in the accounting field for more than 30 years, with 15 years spent at two publicly traded REITs. Prior to Capital Square, she served as the senior regional controller at Brandywine Realty Trust (NYSE: BDN), where she directed accounting for the Mid-Atlantic region. Earlier in her career, she held a similar position at Cornerstone Realty Income Trust, which merged into Colonial Properties Trust (NYSE: CLP) in 2015. Sears graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Sawyer spent more than 13 years as a senior capital accounting analyst at Apple Hospitality REIT (NYSE: APLE) prior to joining Capital Square as assistant controller in 2019. At Apple Hospitality, she created, implemented and oversaw capital expenditures’ accounting and investment in real estate reporting for “hundreds” of Hilton and Marriott hotels nationwide, the company said. Sawyer holds bachelor’s degrees in accounting and statistics from Old Dominion University, and an MBA with a concentration in management from Strayer University.
